Many of the older docks on Lake Chelan were built with non galvanized steel columns. Over the course of time, these columns have continuously corroded (oxidized) as lake levels drop every year exposing these structural elements to the atmosphere. There are three main components necessary for corrosion to occur.
- Oxygen (usually from the atmosphere)
- An electrolyte (usually water)
This particular client's dock support posts have severely corroded to the point that significant structural material has dissolved rendering the posts ineffective in providing adequate support for this dock. The remaining support posts on this particular dock are also significantly corroded whereby large holes can be observed.
This is one of the areas we monitor for our clients as part of our Homewatch services program. We visually inspect the underside of the docks and the conditions of the supporting posts when lake levels drop in late winter/early spring. This is yet another VITAL reason to have someone professionally monitoring your property when you can't be here. We provide Four Season Peace of Mind for our clients. Check out our testimonials
